Mago Maga Roma-X: a live campaign, read against its own numbers

A home coffee roaster that will use automated roast profiles, currently funded to fifty-four times its goal on Kickstarter, with pledging open until 6 September 2026. Nothing has shipped. Two coffee and technology publications have seen the machine, and one photographed it themselves, which is more outside attention than most campaigns at this stage will attract.

This will be the account’s first Kickstarter campaign, so it has no Kickstarter fulfilment record, but an earlier roaster from the same brand is on open sale at US$450 on its own store — that store does quote US dollars, which is evidence that a previous product reached buyers. The campaign, in numbers

Price, and a currency trap

This campaign charges in Hong Kong dollars, and its reward tiers are named in US dollars. The two do not match. It is the first thing we would want a reader to know.

On 2 September 2026 the cheapest tier open is called “$799” and costs HK$6,266, with one place left; behind it “$849” costs HK$6,661, also with one place left. We are not converting that for you, because the rate on the day your card is charged is the one that will apply, and it is not the rate today. What we can tell you is that the number in the tier name is not the number you will pay, and the amount you pay is not fixed in dollars at all.

Checked again on 2 September 2026, and the ladder has gone backwards. On 31 August we recorded HK$6,266 as sold out at 180 backers and said the entry charge had stepped up to HK$6,661. On 2 September HK$6,266 is open again at 179 backers with one place left: somebody cancelled, and the place returned to the pool. HK$6,661 also has one place left of fifty. HK$7,050 has forty-seven.

So the entry price is not a step. It is a flicker. Both of the two cheapest tiers are one cancellation away from opening and one pledge away from closing, and funding ends on 6 September 2026. We are not going to keep telling you which single tier is cheapest today, because the answer has changed three times in a fortnight. What we can tell you is the band: anyone pledging in the last days of this campaign should expect to pay between HK$6,266 and HK$7,050, and should read the reward page rather than this one for the figure that will actually be charged.

Two details from that table are worth drawing out.

First, the cheapest tier closed once — and then came back. On 19 August it had five places left of 180. On 23 August all 180 were taken and the tier was marked ended, so the entry charge stepped up from HK$6,266 to HK$6,661 — HK$395 more for the same machine, four days later. On that date the tier above it had 11 places left of 50. By 2 September HK$6,266 was open again with a single place free. The step is real. It is just not one-way.

Second, the tier names have changed and the charges have not. On 7 August the HK$6,266 tier was called “Super Early Bird — $899”. On 19 August the same HK$6,266 is called “Launch Special — $799”. A tier has been withdrawn and another added in between. The dollar figure in a tier name is a label the campaign can rewrite. The Hong Kong dollar charge underneath it is the part that binds.

All three tiers list the same contents: the roaster, a wheeled transport case, a cleaning brush, a silicone air blower, a bean scoop, a manual and a coupon for green coffee beans. The coffee is a coupon, not beans in the box. All three state November 2026 delivery and shipping anywhere in the world, with a 12-month warranty.

• The tier named “$849” is charged in Hong Kong dollars, so the number in the name is not the number you pay
• No roast result from anyone outside the company — both publications saw the machine, neither measured it

What we could not verify

• The earlier Indiegogo campaign. The maker ran a previous campaign for the ROMA on Indiegogo. That page would not open for us — it failed to render past a consent dialogue. So while the retail listing shows an earlier product exists, we cannot report how that campaign treated its backers. That is the record that would matter most here.
• No roast performance figure from outside the company. Neither publication that saw the machine published a measurement of roast consistency, batch time or temperature accuracy. Seeing a machine and testing one are different things.
• November 2026 is roughly three months after the campaign closes. The maker has not published a tooling or certification timeline that would let a reader judge whether that date will hold.
• Shipping destinations. The campaign states that shipping will reach certain countries only, without listing them on the page we read.

Where this leaves a buyer

Backing this is a bet on a delivery date, not a purchase. The campaign is funded many times over and two publications have seen the machine, but nothing has shipped and no one outside the company has published a roast result. If you want a roaster you can use in 2026, this is not yet that.

Will the campaign be funded?
It has already passed its goal many times over. Kickstarter will collect pledges when funding closes on 6 September 2026.

Has this maker delivered before?
An earlier roaster from the same brand is on sale at retail, which suggests a previous product reached customers. We could not open the earlier Indiegogo campaign to check how its backers were treated, so we cannot go further than that.

What happens if it does not arrive?
